Chinatown remains one of the most emblematic aspects of NYC. Despite this, the neighborhood and many who call it home have recently been the victims of xenophobic renouncement, targeting, and attacks.

Fortunately, many have stepped up to empower the neighborhood and the businesses that comprise it — including Welcome to Chinatown.

Through an array of programs, the grassroots initiative helps bolster individuals and small businesses in the community, while recognizing their remarkable history. Among them is the Longevity Fund, which is the only small business grant program exclusively for Manhattan’s Chinatown. Launched early last year, the fund prioritizes businesses whose cultural or socioeconomic status has prevented them from other grants, and aims to distribute $1 million by the end of 2021.

Other programming by the group includes the Sik Faan Fund, which feeds community members in need while providing aid to Chinatown restaurants, and the Made in Chinatown brand, which helps local businesses establish other revenue streams.

All the pro bono initiatives aim to directly benefit the businesses they serve and amplify their voices while ensuring that they don’t need to compromise their ethics.

Those who wish to support the group can donate directly, spread to word online, or reach out to participate various volunteer efforts. More about Welcome to Chinatown can be found on their website.
