Ula Kinder always had an ardor for herbs and the healthful properties they possess.

“From an early age, I have always had a special connection to herbs growing around me, and to the land my ancestors lived on for many generations,” they explained. “My family has played an important role in initiating me into the world of herbal medicine and springing my love for gardening.”

After moving to the US, Ula forged an even deeper connection with homegrown herbs by making their own herbal remedies and maintaining a medicinal herb garden at Bushwick City Farm. They also started volunteering for local community support groups and offering the remedies to friends, neighbors, and those in need — which cemented their passion as an herbalist and led to the creation of DIY Herbary.

DIY Herbary offers small-batch botanical skincare and herbal remedies, handmade by Ula in Brooklyn. Their beautiful products range from bath soaks to salves to tinctures naturally formulated for a wide variety of needs.

To make the products, Ula harvests herbs grown in their own backyard, as well as community gardens around Bushwick. After the herbs are harvested, they dry them to be used in their home apothecary.

“I learn every day and get inspired by growing and working with plants and from my own personal experiences using herbal medicine,” they said. “My community and my customers make me grow and learn so much, I always listen to their needs and suggestions.”

Ula is also working on launching quarterly herbal subscription boxes that will be curated with different, seasonal products. Those interested in the boxes, which are available to a limited number of subscribers, can reach out to Kinder at diyherbary(at)gmail(dot)com or visit DIY Herbary’s website
