As an assistant set director for film and TV, Morgan Mein found herself with a lot of free time after the pandemic paused the entertainment industry. Then, when the death of George Floyd reignited a nationwide call for civil rights, she decided she wanted to step up and do something to help.

“There was so much information being shared on instagram, which was great, but I knew that if I wanted to be a real ally, I needed to do more to account for reparations for the Black community,” she said. “What started as a love for flower arranging became a tool for activism.”

Morgan started Flowers for the Cause as a way to raise funds for Black Lives Matter organizations and bring farm fresh cut flowers to the NYC community.

The beautiful arrangements from Flowers for the Cause are made with donated blooms from Wild and Cultivated Farms in the Berkshires. To create them, Morgan first travels all the way to the farm to pick up the flowers before heading back to the city to make 30 to 40 arrangements. She then sells them the following day, with 100% of the proceeds going to organizations that are empowering individuals of color and the LGBTQ+ community. So far, donations have gone to The Okra Project, For the Gworls, and the Black Trans Travel Fund.

Morgan started the project out as a bi-monthly pop-up at Brooklyn based CSA Local Roots, but she is hoping to expand her efforts until flower season ends in the early fall. More info about her efforts, as well as updates about future pop-ups can be found on Flowers for the Cause’s Instagram and website.
