Based in Central Brooklyn (Bed Stuy and Crown Heights), Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC) is a membership-led, direct-action organization building power and self-determination in the two neighborhoods though many different programs and campaigns.
BMC’s multifaceted programming addresses issues ranging from food sovereignty to housing stabilization to police accountability — an issue that is being addressed in communities nationwide. To help respond and correct the discriminatory and racially biased practices of police, BMC formed the Police Accountability Working (PAW) Group, a group of members that work to unsure a healthy relationship with officers and Central Brooklyn residents. They also organize demonstrations against police brutality, host educational forums to discuss historic civil rights struggles, hold trainings on recording police and understanding your rights when confronted by law enforcement, and are a member of the campaign Communities United for Police Reform to end discriminatory policing practices in New York.
To better ensure residents’ access to food, BMC is also creating a food co-op that both serves and is run by Central Brooklyn residents. Currently in its organizing phase, the Central Brooklyn Food Co-op will offer an open membership and is seeking organizers to help with everything from fundraising to financial management. BMC also offers an online Food Justice toolkit, which provides helpful info about food inequality as well organizations that are working to improve it.
The organization also addresses housing issues in the area, reports on issues through their digital journalism platform Brooklyn Deep, and organizes bike patrols to combat street harassment — and the programming doesn’t stop there.
